FAQs

Everything you need to know before your massage.

Massage Therapy & Treatment

What is therapeutic massage?

Therapeutic massage is a personalized approach to massage therapy focused on the muscles, connective tissues, and other soft tissues of the body. Rather than following the same routine for every client, treatment is tailored to your individual needs, areas of tension, activity level, and goals.

Kevin may incorporate a combination of Swedish massage, deep tissue work, stretching, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, and other therapeutic techniques when appropriate.

What is the difference between therapeutic massage and a relaxation massage?

A relaxation massage is generally focused on overall relaxation and stress reduction. Therapeutic massage is more targeted and may focus on specific areas of muscle tension, restricted movement, physical stress, or discomfort.

At ProHealth, the two aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive. Your massage can promote relaxation while also incorporating focused therapeutic work where you need it.

What is deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue massage uses slower, focused techniques and deeper pressure where appropriate to address tight or overworked muscles and areas of persistent muscular tension.

Deep tissue does not simply mean applying as much pressure as possible. Kevin adjusts the pressure and techniques based on your needs, comfort level, and how your body responds.

What is Swedish massage?

Swedish massage uses flowing massage techniques designed to encourage relaxation, ease muscular tension, and promote circulation. It can be used on its own or incorporated into a customized therapeutic massage session.

What is LaStone Therapy?

LaStone Therapy incorporates heated and cooled stones into massage therapy. Kevin completed additional training in LaStone Therapy and may incorporate stone therapy into treatments when appropriate.

Do I need to know which type of massage to book?

No. If you’re unsure whether you need deep tissue, Swedish, therapeutic massage, or a combination of techniques, Kevin can discuss your concerns and tailor the session to your needs.

Most treatments at ProHealth are individualized and may incorporate more than one massage technique.

Conditions, Pain & Recovery

What types of concerns can therapeutic massage help with?

Clients seek therapeutic massage for many reasons, including muscle tension, stiffness, overworked muscles, repetitive-use discomfort, limited mobility, sports-related muscular issues, and recovery from physical activity.

Kevin also has extensive training in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, pathology, clinical assessment, and remedial exercise, allowing him to take a knowledgeable approach to each client’s individual concerns.

Can massage therapy help with sports-related muscle tension and recovery?

Therapeutic massage can be particularly useful for active individuals dealing with tight, fatigued, or overworked muscles.

Kevin has been involved in competitive sports throughout his life as both an athlete and coach, giving him firsthand understanding of the physical demands of training, competition, and recovery.

Can massage help with neck and shoulder tension?

Massage therapy can target tight and overworked muscles in the neck, shoulders, and upper back. Your treatment can be customized based on where you’re experiencing tension and what may be contributing to it.

Can massage help after an injury?

Massage may be incorporated into a broader recovery plan for certain injuries once massage is appropriate for your situation.

If you have a new, significant, or undiagnosed injury, Kevin may recommend that you first speak with an appropriate medical professional. Massage therapists do not diagnose medical conditions.

Do you work with athletes?

Yes. Kevin specializes in therapeutic and sports massage and has extensive personal experience in competitive sports as both an athlete and coach.

He works with everyone from active adults and weekend warriors to competitive athletes.

Do I need a doctor's diagnosis or referral?

A referral is generally not necessary to receive massage therapy. However, if you’re experiencing symptoms that haven’t been medically evaluated, have a significant injury, or have a health condition that could affect whether massage is appropriate, you may be advised to consult your physician or another qualified healthcare professional first.

What to Expect & Safety

What happens before my massage?

Your appointment begins with a conversation about your health history, current concerns, areas of discomfort or tension, activity level, and goals for the session.

This information helps Kevin determine which massage techniques may be most appropriate for you.

What happens during my massage?

Your session is customized to your needs and may include a combination of massage techniques rather than one predetermined routine.

Kevin may use Swedish massage, deep tissue work, stretching, trigger point therapy, myofascial techniques, heat, or other therapeutic methods when appropriate.

You are encouraged to communicate throughout your massage about pressure, comfort, positioning, or anything else that would make the experience more comfortable for you.

Will deep tissue massage hurt?

Deep tissue massage may feel more intense in areas of significant muscle tension, but therapeutic massage should not simply be about tolerating as much pressure as possible.

Kevin adjusts pressure throughout the session based on the area being treated, your comfort level, and how your body responds. Always speak up if you would like the pressure adjusted.

What should I wear for my massage?

You will have privacy to undress to your individual comfort level. Professional draping is used throughout the massage, and only the area being worked on is uncovered.

If a particular technique is better performed while clothed or requires different preparation, Kevin can explain that before treatment begins.

What should I expect after my massage?

Everyone responds differently. You may feel relaxed, notice less muscular tension, or become more aware of areas that were particularly tight.

Depending on your needs, Kevin may also recommend stretches, remedial exercises, self-massage, heat or cold, or other home-care strategies to support you between appointments.

Is massage therapy safe for everyone?

Massage is appropriate for many people, but certain medical conditions, injuries, medications, or circumstances may require modifications or medical clearance.

Be sure to provide an accurate health history and tell Kevin about recent injuries, surgeries, medical conditions, medications, or changes in your health before your massage.

Can Kevin diagnose my condition?

No. Massage therapists do not provide medical diagnoses.

Kevin’s extensive training allows him to assess muscles, movement, and soft-tissue concerns within the scope of massage therapy. If your symptoms require medical evaluation or diagnosis, you may be referred to an appropriate healthcare professional.

Appointments & Services

How long are massage appointments?

ProHealth offers massage sessions in several lengths, allowing your appointment to be selected based on your needs and the amount of treatment time desired.

Choose the session length that works best for you when scheduling, or contact Kevin if you’re unsure which appointment is appropriate.

Can different massage techniques be combined during one appointment?

Yes. In fact, this is an important part of Kevin’s approach.

Your treatment may combine Swedish massage, deep tissue work, therapeutic techniques, stretching, heat, or other methods depending on what is appropriate for your needs.

Is LaStone Therapy an additional charge?

Kevin incorporates LaStone Therapy into many treatments when appropriate without an additional charge.

Do I need an appointment?
